How Carriers Evaluate CDL Drivers
What do carriers check in a CDL background check?
Carriers check four primary sources: (1) Your MVR from your state DMV — accidents and violations for the past 3-5 years. (2) FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse — mandatory federal query for all CDL positions. (3) DAC/HireRight — a database of previous employer contacts including reason for separation and drug test history. (4) Criminal background, employment verification, and gap history.
How many at-fault accidents will disqualify me?
Most major carriers (JB Hunt, Werner, Swift, Schneider) disqualify drivers with 2 or more at-fault accidents in the last 3 years. One at-fault accident may require a written explanation or waiver. Regional and smaller carriers are often more flexible. The severity of the accident (injuries, cargo damage amount) also factors into the decision.
Can I get hired with a DUI on my CDL record?
A DUI within the last 3 years is a disqualifier for most DOT-regulated carriers. A DUI from 3-10 years ago that is fully resolved may be reviewed case-by-case. Beyond 10 years, most carriers will not count it. Note: A HazMat endorsement requires TSA approval — certain DUI convictions result in a permanent HazMat disqualification regardless of time.
What does the FMCSA Clearinghouse mean for my job search?
The FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse is a federal database all carriers must check before hiring. An unresolved violation legally prohibits you from operating a commercial motor vehicle. To resolve a violation, you must complete the Return-to-Duty (RTD) process with an FMCSA-approved Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). You can check your own record at clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov.
How does my employment history affect CDL hiring?
Carriers typically verify all employment in the past 3 years and specifically request DAC (HireRight) reports from previous trucking employers. Having 3+ employers in 24 months raises job-hopping flags. Gaps of 6+ months require explanation. Terminations for cause (safety violations, failed drug tests, insubordination) will appear on your DAC report and significantly reduce your options at major carriers.
