Rutas de Carrera CDL
Obtener tu CDL y Empezar
Obtén tu CDL Clase A o Clase B en 4 a 8 semanas. Muchas empresas ofrecen capacitación pagada sin experiencia previa.
- Meet DOT requirements (age 21+, pass DOT physical)
- Obtain Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) — 14-day hold minimum
- Complete CDL training (carrier-sponsored or private school)
- Pass Class A or Class B skills test
- Apply to entry-level positions — many carriers hire at CDL school graduation
OTR → Local o Regional
Cambia de largo viaje a rutas locales o regionales. Ganas tiempo en casa y horarios predecibles a cambio de algo de ingreso.
- Build 1–2 years OTR experience (most local carriers require this)
- Get clean MVR — local carriers are stricter on driving records
- Target dedicated route carriers (Amazon, Walmart, US Foods, Sysco)
- Consider adding endorsements (Hazmat, TWIC) to increase local job options
- Apply through FillTheRig — specify "local" or "regional" preference
Veterano Militar → Conductor CDL
Los veteranos con MOS calificado pueden omitir el examen práctico del CDL. El GI Bill puede cubrir la escuela de CDL.
- Check your MOS — 88M, 91B, 92A qualify for skills test waiver
- Apply for CDL skills waiver at your state DMV/MVA
- Use GI Bill (Ch. 33 or Ch. 30) to cover CDL school if needed
- Target veteran-friendly carriers (many offer signing bonuses)
- Apply — veterans often get priority review by carrier recruiters
Conductor de Empresa → Propietario-Operador
El Propietario-Operador tiene mayor ingreso bruto pero también mayores gastos. Net promedio: $65,000–$90,000 después de gastos.
- Build 2–3 years clean driving record as company driver
- Save a down payment ($15,000–$30,000) or qualify for truck financing
- Get your own authority (MC number) OR lease to a carrier
- Set up business entity (LLC), IFTA, IRP, UCR registration
- Understand your cost-per-mile BEFORE quitting company job
Clase B → Actualización a Clase A
Actualizar de Clase B a Clase A abre rutas nacionales OTR y regionales con un aumento salarial de $15,000–$25,000/año.
- Hold valid Class B CDL — no retest of written knowledge
- Complete Class A upgrade training (3–6 weeks, fewer hours than starting from scratch)
- Pass Class A pre-trip inspection and road skills test
- Get at least 1 combination vehicle endorsement (doubles, triples)
- Apply to regional or OTR positions immediately after upgrade

How long does it take to get a CDL from scratch?
Most CDL training programs take 4–8 weeks. You must hold a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) for a minimum of 14 days before the skills test. Carrier-sponsored programs are often free in exchange for a 1-year driving commitment.
Can I get a CDL with no experience?
Yes. Entry-level CDL positions are available, and many carriers offer paid CDL training. You do not need prior trucking experience to start.
What is the highest-paying CDL job?
Owner-Operators on specialized routes (oversized, Hazmat, LNG/CNG) earn the most — $100,000+ gross is achievable. Among company driver positions, OTR Class A with Hazmat endorsement typically pays the most.
Is it worth upgrading from Class B to Class A?
For most drivers, yes. The salary difference averages $15,000–$25,000 per year, and training takes only 3–6 weeks since you already hold a CDL. The upgrade pays for itself quickly.
